All of our homebred pigs are Gloucestershire Old Spot, a rare breed traditional to our home county that produces a fantastic flavour. They live outdoors all year round with their straw filled arks to sleep in and their orchard to mooch and root in.
In 2014 we bought our first Gloucestershire Old Spot wearers (young pigs). With the help of friends (and a bit of YouTube!) we butchered these once they had grown and produced our first sausages.
After about a couple of years of buying in wearers and rearing them outside nice and slowly, we decided to venture into breeding our own purebred Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs. We bought our first sow Lotty who came to us already in pig (pregnant).
Clearly if you want to breed pigs having just girls is not enough so we also acquired our lovely boar Onslow.
Along with Onslow our breeding sows are now made up of Princess Freda, Polly (Lottie’s daughter) and Hyacinth. Between them they have about 4 litters per year of between 7 and 12 piglets.
With distinctive spots and floppy ears we love breeding this traditional pig and in producing great tasting pork we are part of keeping this great breed of pigs part of our farming life.
